My Scholarly Interest
My name is Basori. I am a lecturer and teacher trainer in the Tadris Bahasa Inggris English Education Program at Universitas Islam Negeri (UIN) Maulana Malik Ibrahim in Malang, East Java. In 2024, I began my PhD at Purdue University taking Learning Design and Technology Program in Department of Curriculum and Instruction. My primary research interest is in instructional technology and professional development for educators to improve educational outcomes in the madrassah and pesantren systems and in under-developed and -resourced settings. My intention to pursue a doctoral degree in Learning Design and Technology is to understand how to enhance the Technological Pedagogical Content Knowledge (TPACK) capacity of future prospective teachers and to apply instructional technology in the Indonesian context.
Within the context, I also want to delve in instructional design and technology for diverse settings, including distance education, online, and hybrid delivery. I will pursue research in the Community of Inquiry (CoI) model. CoI focuses on how to develop, implement, and evaluate the three elements of the model (social, cognitive, and teaching presence) and their interplay to obtain the maximum learning outcomes. I plan to study the model in underserved and under-researched contexts, such as madrassah and pesantren religious schools in Indonesia, where facilities, resources, and technological literacy are extremely constrained. My intention is to use the research and learning experience to create instructional models, strategies, and curricula that best fit with the needs and conditions for teachers in Indonesia working in these contexts. Big picture Overall, my research will help transform education in Indonesia and improve the learning opportunities for future generations.
After completing my Ph.D., I will go back return to my home university in Indonesia and focus on ensuring my doctoral research translates into real-world impact. My main responsibility is teaching undergraduate students preparing for their future career as teachers of English as a second or foreign language at madrassah or pesantren religious schools. These Islamic primary/ secondary education institutions in Indonesia are often attended by students from low socio-economic backgrounds. I will disseminate best practices and strategies for instructional design and technology, as well as strengthen professional development programs for young teachers. Part of this will involve creating training of trainers courses, through which I can ensure what I learn reaches as many educators in Indonesia as possible. With these multi-stage cascading activities, I will have more chances to spread what I have learned to the community at large.
